Tanzania - Loiborsoit

THANKS FOR THE DRINKING WATER!

location/water situation: Arusha District - southern of the Serengeti Nationalpark

There is a 10 year-old well with a depth of 120 meters for 10,000 people in the vicinity of 50 km. In this well an underwater pump which pumps about 500 liters into a water tank with 36,000 liters of capacity is installed. However, this has become never full.

We carried out to find water and could ascertain water in a depth of approx. 120 m.

Why Loiborsoit? A household (about 5 persons) is only allowed to get a canister with water all three days. A small canister costs 100 Tansanische shillings, a canister with 500 litres costs 2,000 Tansanische shillings (1 euro). This money is used for the preservation of the well and also for the fuel costs for the stream aggregate.

In this region Massai have dug 7 wells by hand. The wells are 25 to 50 metres deep and have a diameter of more than 2 metres. In this well from 9 to 20 people stand down and everybody passes a tub upwards to the next until the water reaches the top.

The cleaner water is filled in canisters for the people and the dirtier water is poured in the drinks for the animals. But also this water is no drinking water and is sufficient only roughly for the population and their animals.

Also the way to these water places is very dangerous. One year ago a pregnant woman in the ninth month which wants to get water has been attacked by a lion.

Since the last months more and more people and animals die because of the dirty water. At the last counting 36.936 animals were counted like goats, chickens, sheep and donkeys. The people fall ill with cholera among other things which cannot be treated on grounds of the missing medical care. In the whole region no hospital exist.
